U-Blog 4

Well I went to the Heritage at the Lowman homes this past Wednesday. There were about 8 people that turned out. The lesson for the day was learning how to setup an email account and using it. They were pretty scared of the computer and even more computer illiterate. However, they were willing to learn and very excited about the possibility of sending emails back and forth to loved ones. Since we all will have to teach a class out there eventually, be prepared to have lots of patience and fun. They were fun and gracious!

  1. Yeah I had a good time today as well when we did our Lowman Home project, I think I spent almost 2 hours explaining eBay to them. But I enjoyed it.

  2. Its really refreshing to hear that the residents of Lowman homes were willing to put forth effort to learn technology. As I said before, senior citizens are willing to learn about technology, it just seems to be an intimidating subject at times. When we are able to relate to the interests of our audience, it helps make the learning process easier and it puts into context how the things we are teaching them can be helpful. Patience is undoubtedly the most important virtue to have. Your students will remember your willingness to work with them. I hope that our visit will be as productive as yours was.

  3. I am certainly looking forward to the experience. I have taught a couple of classes so far, and while it was with adults, it was pretty interesting none the less. It's good to hear that the residents are interested in learning; nothing can worsen the experience than people who are uninterested in the subject. Do you think you'd be interested in teaching classes in the future?

  4. I was one of the 8 people at the Lowman Homes lecture on setting up an email account. I also thought the lecture to be pretty interesting and entertaining. I also liked the idea of how the residents really wanted to know how to use email and that we were able to help them setting up the account. It was a great lecture overall.

I have not had the opportunity to experience any of the workshops yet. But after reading some of these comments I realize I am missing a great educational experience. This class is all about training and learning the necessary skills. The fact that I may get to see this practical theory in use in a real-life situation is truly exciting. I will be attending the next few upcoming workshops. Hope to see some of you.
